In the class, we exchange information about a variety of things, including nice places to visit in Japan or Japanese-related activities to do in Brisbane. The other day, we were talking about our favourite don.
The word "don" (丼) comes from "donburi." It is a Japanese term that refers to a type of rice bowl dish, typically consisting of a bowl of steamed rice topped with a variety of ingredients such as meat, seafood, vegetables, or eggs. The ingredients are usually served in a savoury sauce or broth, creating a delicious and satisfying meal.
Some common types of don include:
Gyudon (牛丼) – A bowl of rice topped with thinly sliced beef, onions, and a soy-based sauce.
Katsudon (カツ丼) – A rice bowl with a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet (tonkatsu), topped with a scrambled egg and sauce.
Tendon (天丼) – A rice bowl topped with tempura (battered and fried seafood or vegetables).
Unadon (鰻丼) – A rice bowl with grilled eel glazed in a sweet soy-based sauce.
Oyakodon (親子丼) – A rice bowl with chicken and eggs, simmered together in a savoury sauce.
It’s a popular and versatile dish, often enjoyed for lunch or dinner in Japan and around the world. There are many shops that serve don dishes around Brisbane too. They’re a quick and easy option for a casual meal.
Have you tried any don before? (どんぶりをたべたことがありますか?)
What is your favourite? (おきにいりはなんですか?)
A couple of years ago, we found a great place for donburi in Rosalie. Even if you’ve tried all kinds of don or if you're a gourmet eater, ‘Uncle Don’ will not disappoint you. It’s a specialty restaurant that offers a whole new level of don. They offer modern and well-presented don dishes, as well as other popular Japanese dishes such as the Katsu Sando (deep-fried pork cutlet sandwich).
They have larger branches in West End and Woolloongabba, which offer a wider variety of menu options, including keto don – a balanced diet option with colourful vegetables.
So far, we have tried:
Salmon Sashimi Don
(salmon sashimi, sushi rice, shiso leaf, soy-cured yolk, and ikura)
Nasu Dengaku Don
(grilled eggplant, sweet miso, steamed rice, house-made tofu foam, nori salt, and spring onion)
Tofu on Tofu Don
(fried tofu teriyaki, steamed rice, tofu foam, gyoza skin furikake, and spring onion)
Wagyu Steak Don
(MBS 7-8+ wagyu steak, teriyaki, steamed rice, soft-cooked free-range egg, roasted nori flakes, and spring onion)
Pork Katsu Sando
(Japanese crunchy pork cutlet sandwich, cabbage slaw)
They were all absolutely delicious! In Japanese, we have the expression ‘ほっぺたがおちそう’ (Hoppeta ga ochisou) which you say when you've eaten jaw-droppingly delicious food.
*ほっぺた=ほっぺ is casual expression of ほほ(cheak)
*おちそう=おちる(drop)+そう(might)
They also offer chicken, curry, and keto options (at the West End and Woolloongabba locations). Woolloongabba even has a dessert menu, including:
Yuzu Semifreddo
(black sesame gelato, candied yuzu, shortbread crumb, raspberry coulis)
Matcha Tiramisu Don
(mascarpone ice cream, honeycomb, biscuits, and matcha syrup)
Check the menu at each branch as they offer slightly different variety and enjoy delicious Donburi at 'Uncle Don'! OPENING HOURS Lunch: 11:30am to 3pm Dinner: 5pm to 9pm Uncle Don Wooloongabba
